The integumentary system which covers the body, consists of the skin and accessory structure. The skin, one of the largest organs in the body, consists of two principal layers. The thin outer layer is known as the epidermis. Beneath this is a thicker layer called the dermis which rests on the subcutaneous layer that is composed of additional connective and adipose tissue.
ReplyDeleteHair follicles, nails, nerve endings, sweat glands and sebaceous glands are also included in the integumentary system. The system aids in regulating body temperature, provides a physical barrier against bacteria and dehydration, contains receptors to touch and pain, houses blood vessles for circulation and assists in the production of vitamin D in the body.
